Question about MBR editing....

Hi,

I recently reinstalled a clean copy of win2k pro and i have two options when win2k begins to load, something like "win2k professional" and there is another one below it that just says "win2k". I was wondering how I could get rid of the old one that says "win2k"? Is it a matter of editing the mbr? How do I go about doing this? I've formatted a mbr before in the past, should I have done that before I reinstalled? Any help would be great. Thanks

There is no need to edit your MBR.

Instead, you can edit a file on your main drive in the root folder called "boot.ini" which controls the Windows NT boot loader. You probably have two entries in that file right now. You can just delete the line that has the description of "Win2k" and the boot loader will automatically load "Win2k Professional" without even asking you for a choice. You can also change the default OS from that file.

In other words, its about the equivalent to lilo.conf if you're familiar with Linux.

There are some fairly good instructions on the syntax of boot.ini at this MSDN site.

It's even easier than editing your boot.ini

just right click on my computer>proporties
goto the advanced tab
goto startup and recovery
remove the checkmark from "display a list of operating systems"

technically it will still have that item in boot.ini but it wont matter because it wont get displayed
