question about making a DC website

First off I have no experience in making any sort of webage. I registered at NO-ip.com and got my self setup for dynamic DNS. I use a netgear router and when I try to go to the webpage I get my router. I am happy because I know everything is working fine, but how do I go about making a webpage I want show up?

Have you set up your router so that it forwards the specified port to the computer that is running the website?

I suppose it all depends on how complex you want it!

For a simple, text page, when starting out, I'd use something like Word and save it as HTML! Some people may frown on that, but as a start it's better than a "This page cannot be displayed" or "This web site is under construction"!! 🙂

When you want to move onto more complex web pages (or even simple ones if you want it done properly, rather than Microsoft's attempts 😉), look at Macromedia Dreamweaver, its a very powerful yet still quite simple HTML editor.

As for how to host it, you should be able to find a way to forward port 80 (the standard HTTP port) on your router to whatever computer you are going to host it on. If you are using Windows 2000 or XP (Pro definately, not sure about Home) you can set up IIS (Internet Information Services) and save any pages you want to display into C:\Inetpub\wwwroot. With Win2k there is a 10 user limit with IIS, so be wary of that when lots of people try to connect and can't 😉

I'm sure more people will come along and post more meaningful and useful information, but this should hopefully get you started 🙂

Take a look at the content on my site (not the layout, that was done by Soni 🙂)

well I got IIS installed, i'm on xp pro by the way. I'm looking at my router and on port forwarding i see the following things to set up Start Port, End Port, Server IP Address

I tried 80, 80, and the local ip address to my machine I want to host it. I went back and tries the webpage and still got my router.

I have a netgear RT314 router if anybody is familiar with this router.

Wow! YOU HAVE TO TURN OFF REMOTE ADMINISTRATION QUICKLY!! That means that WAN side you are getting the admin page. You want that to only work from LAN side.

Unless maybe you specified your internal ip to no-ip.
