Question about Mac computers...

I've noticed that when I am using the Mac's at my university, they all seem choppy and slow. A perfect example is IE. It sucks at resizing the browser screen (not to mention that there doesnt even seem to be a "Maximize window" button anywhere.

I understand this could be just the computer because it is an "eMac" computer, but by looking at the specs, it doesnt seem that bad.

OSX 10.2.8
1GHz G4 (133 MHz FSB)
640MB SDRAM (133MHz) (1x512, 1x128)
Video Card: I dunno, whatever comes with an eMac v3.3.

So is it always like this or is it just this particular computer configuration that sucks?

I have a dual-G4 here at work that I do DVD authoring on and the interface is definitely not as responsive as my Windows 2000 machine I have next to it.

Most likely it has to do with the university's software build. Also, remember that lab computers are horribly abused machines. The things I have seen while working in the labs at my university make me amazed that the computers last more than a couple months. My favourite so far is that guy who tried to put a floppy diskette into the tray-loading CD-ROM drive.

oo... ouch.
how stupid do people get?!

Most likely the software your university installed on it, as well as IE sucks no matter what platform you use it on. Use safari.

I couldn't agree more.

IE sucks it on the Mac. Firefox or Safari are MUCH better.

That coupled with an upgrade to 10.3 and that eMac would be running MUCH better.

Yup. I got my apple laptop because I wanted something different, and since I got it, I barely use my desktop windows machine because IMO, the interface for OS X is just that much better,

I don't think IE has been revised or updated on the Mac platform at all since the introduction of the OS. If anyone knows otherwise, please post!

I am pretty certain you are correct. There really is no need for IE on the mac, because if it is needed, you can change the user agent in safari so other pages (like banking) think it's IE and let you proceed.

It has. Version 4 (and I believe 3) were available for the PPC/Mac platform.

5.2.3 is the most current version available and it sucks hard. As has been said a number of times in this thread, Safari or Firefox are MUCH better alternatives.

I think he meant since osx came out. They have only updated it a couple times to fix security problems and random fixes like that.

You're @ UM, right? What program are you in? Do you have to use the Mac lab?

This replay is a little delayed... I forgot about the post after I made it 🙂

I go to the UM. I'm in the faculty of science, but I'm taking a major in Psychology and probably a minor in computer science. The mac I was posting from was at the UW (that's where my GF goes to school)

Do you go to the UM?

It went from 5.1 to 5.2.2 I believe. Just minor fixes.
