Damn, I really need to re-read these books, then. Wow.

Thanks!

Page 362 of The Fellowship of the Ring:
The Sword of Elendil was forget anew by elvish smiths, and on its blade was traced a device of seven stars set between the crescent Moon and the rayed Sun, and about them were written many runes; for Aragorn son of Arathorn was going to war upon the marches of Mordor. Very bright was that sword when it was made whole again; the light shone cold, and its edge was hard and keen. And Aragorn gave it a new nam and called it Anduril, Flame of the West.

That implies that he did in fact receive it in Rivendell. I'm wrong. =]

I'm pretty sure Aragorn has the sword through most of the books. As for the dead, the books don't give many details about their deeds. Their fight is told in past tense and don't even fight at Minas Tirth, they fight the cosairs and then their gone.

I believe they originally swore an oath to come to gondor and the kings call against the forces of mordor... they had to make up for backing out of it... once they did, since aragon was such a nice guy, he let them go...
