So I'm building myself a computer for the first time and I'm just about at the stage where I'm buying parts, so I know very little about linux except for the fact that its free which is a huge plus. My computer will be mostly used for gaming if that makes a difference but can anyone explain the + and - of linux. Also if linux is the superior OS can anyone point me in the direction of a good how to which might explain to me the finer points of putting linux on my system. Thanks

As I see fit since your PC will be using for Gaming mainly you would want to flop on a Windows XP Pro SP2 for sure. Although there's so many Linux flavors out there. I would suggest that you check out Ubuntu and Suse as your primary "n00b" Linux experience if you decide to go that way but although your selection in games will be slashed if you do go along in the Linux path.

As for the + and - of a Linux system, I am a n00b myself as well. I hope somebody will be able to answer that better for you.

as a gamer I would go with XP SP2, but i would recommend setting up a dual boot system with Ubuntu (or any distro of your choice) so you can learn some more about the OS.

For games you basically need XP. If I were you I would pick up a nice sub-200 computer. Throw linux on that and have fun learning.

GET LINUX IF...
-You want to save money
-You like having the option of customization
-You like to spend a lot of time configuring things
-You want security and reliability

DON'T GET LINUX IF...
-You want to game a lot
-You lack any measure of patience
-You want out-of-the-box compatibility

My advice to you would be to go get a noob Linux, such as Ubuntu or Suse and grab either the LILO or GRUB bootloader and dual-boot Windows and Linux.
