This is not true. I was in for [grand] jury duty (Nassau County, NY) in March and the first day they asked if anybody was a full-time student... just show them the transcript that they have 12+ credits in the current semester and they are exempt. A few were let go that morning. Bring your transcript.

That was my second time after I got it postponed the first time in January. I had used the excuse that I had many deadlines coming up for work (which was true) and they gave me a 2 month delay no problem. They figure they'll get you eventually. When I got my 2nd notice in March, I said I may as well get it over with. I served 10 official days that ran the course of March 4 - March 26 (we were told not to come in a few days, and of course no Fridays). Jury Duty sucks... but at least I won't have to hear from them again for another 8 years.

Grand Jurys simply decide whether a case should go to trial or not... where trial jurys take over. It's taking them 18 months to decide if there's enough evidence ?!

Getting completely out of jury duty is a major bitch. On the other hand, in most states getting a deferment is easy, you can get one or two with no questions asked. If it conflicts with your course schedule request a deferment, your service gets pushed back.

You're too dumb to realize that the jury system sucks and shouldn't be bothering students while in school.

You can usually just fill out the portion of the summons that says you would like to postpone it and they'll approve for up to 3 month. Then there'll be no scheduling conflicts.

BTW, if you don't want to serve, once you're there, just tell them what I always tell them: "I'm a Senior Engineer".

That's all it takes to get kicked off.

They asked us if our companies paid us... all of ours who served did get paid by our present company for serving... I'd imagine if they didn't, they wouldn't keep us there... because the county stopped paying jurors a couple years back. They did say it used to be $40/day which is supposed to make up for gas/food too.

What a sorry excuse. It's a part of life in this country and people only want to get out of it. Missing one day of class to participate in the judicial system is such a hardship? Typical self-important asshattery. Congrats.

EDIT: Did it occur to you that the reason states might be getting rid of exemptions is because of this piss-poor attitude that jury duty is something to be avoided?

depends on the state... I got called for jury duty while in college, and was able to defer it until summer vacation.

my sister was able to get out of jury duty a few months ago due to extreme financial stress (days not working = no rent money).

(this is all in New Jersey).
