Question about job offers & interviews...um....for a friend

Scarpozzi

Lifer
So...a friend of mine....let's call him Izzopracs might have had an interview at a hospital last week for an IT job. The same friend has another interview at a medium-sized University IT job next Wednesday.

Hypothetically, if, umm....my friend were to get an offer from the hospital job before hearing the results of the University interview, what should he tell the first company? Accept the job knowing another one may come back with an offer a few days or a week later?

I'm just trying to figure out how to weigh options and ultimately end up with the best employment scenario possible.....for Izzopracs.

Thanks.

It's customary to ask for a couple of weeks to mull over accepting an offer of employment. Most companies know that people apply to more than one job at a time and thus are pretty understanding with this sort of thing.

Edit: Almost forgot, good luck with the interviews!

Mate, just tell them at the interview that your interviewing elsewhere if they ask you. Most company's like to see that others are interested in you so if you have made it past a 2nd stage tell them.

When you get the offer tell them you'd like to think about it and you'll let them know and ask when do you have to get back to them with a concrete answer.

Good luck!

Go with the hospital...think of all of those nurses dam it!

They are not going to be interested in an IT geek though.

If you have both interviews scheduled; do not worry unless one provides an offer and the other has indicated during the interview that they are interested in you.

Once you have an offer; as others stated, you will have 1-2 weeks to committ.

At this point, you will have an idea which of the two you would prefer and/or are interested in you.

If the other (B) expressed interest when you get an offer from (A), and you are interested in the (B); contact (B) and advise them that you are still interested in them, but you have an offer that you need to make a decision on within a set time frame.

You can substitue the Hospital for (A) or (B) and the University as the other.

The same rules apply.

If both make an offer; then evaluate based on pay, work condiitions, advancement, convience and career expansion.

Just say you need a small amount of time to mull over it, or come back with a counter-offer and let them sit on that. Just a few typical delay tactics, but certainly don't hold them hostage with it.

I'd still pick the hospital over the university.

I work at a University and the eye candy is amazing, especially during spring/summer...but that's all it will ever be, eye-candy.

you're doing it wrong. the freshmen are the easiest prey... especially if they're from the conservative background, there are exceptions of course.

Actually, that's not always true. Some companies aren't always so accomodating if they learn that you potentially have another offer on the way. Why would they wait and allow themselves to get into a potential bidding war for your services? They might give you a hard deadline in hopes you'll take the sure thing instead of waiting on an offer that isnt guaranteed yet.

If the hospital gives an offer, stall, but don't let on that you're also waiting on the university. You can buy some time by asking them to mail you the offer in writing so you can review the details, and also mention you want to talk it over with your family. Meanwhile, tell the university that you already have an offer, so they know if they want you, they'll have to move quickly.

That's what I would do, based on my last two job searches. One company actually gave me only a weekend to decide when I told them I had interviews lined up with their competitors!
