It totally depends on the field....a rare degree esp. from a top school = instant job + bonus + car + expenses, etc....
I had an almost complete (-2 core classes for the degree but + 30 optional core classes I took as extras totally 160 hours of progress, not changing degrees mid-stream) biology/zoology/chemistry/microbiology degree and was making close to 40k about 10 years ago now (doing banking)...i decided to go back to school in 1999 to get an actual full degree....I did it in Comp Sci, but now the first questions everyone asks is: Are you A+? MSCE? CNA? etc...... They also sometimes ask for unrealistic things like 10+ years in Windows XP, 5 years+ in Office 2000, etc.
Job experience is a big plus, everyone with an AOL Homepage claims to be a web designer now...so when you talk about your own website people are thinking scrolling and flashing text and a gazillion bmp's...
