question about ipod.

This was probably answered a million times before, but I cant find the answer to this.
Does the ipod only play music downloaded with itunes? or it can play ANY music files that one has on his computer as long as it's in compatible format? Also does itunes ever alter the music on your computer in any way or check if it's "legal" by RIAA's standards?

OK, here's the LONG answer 🙂

The iPod CAN play .WAV, .AIFF, .MP3, .AAC (Apple MPEG4 Format, what the iTunes Music Store uses), and Audible book format files.

The iPod CANNOT play .WMA (Windows Media Audio) files without having iTunes convert them to MP3's first, which dimishes the quality somewhat. The iPod cannot play copyrighted WMV's either, so it's not compatible with music download sites like walmart.com, Yahoo Music, or Napster. It also cannot play FLAC or Ogg Vorbis files, which means that's probably not the best music player for those open source supporting Linux hippies 🙂

In order words, the iPod can play almost every major music format. The only exception to this are copyright protected Windows Media files, which may or may not be a problem depending on which online music services you plan on using.
