Question about invitation to onsite interview

Huh, well this is cool... I had an interview last week but after I walked out, I thought "damn, that sucked, I won't be hearing from them". But a few days later I got another email that is an invitation for me to interview with them onsite.

It is a 10 hour drive just to get there and it asks if I plan to fly or drive. I assume if I drove that they would pay me by the mile (for gas and using my own car)? Isn't the travel rate per mile like a set state rate? Cause in Michigan, the rate was 37.5 cents/mile in 2004 which likely means it is over 40 cents/mile now.

I don't know... I just have a hard time seeing them pay 40+ cents/mile for me to drive 523 miles down there, then back. Gas only costs me 10 cents/mile @ $3/gallon and sure there is wear and tear on my car and even throw in another $20 for an oil change, but are they really gonna give me over $400 if I drove? What about meals?

Obviously this is something to ask the company about, but I'd think the general interview process of bringing candidates to the company and paying for their costs is the same all over. I don't have the money to pay a bunch out of pocket without reimbursement (although I'm sure my parents would pay for it if needed). And I don't want to look like a chump if I'm asking them all this stuff like "so you fools betta be paying for this!". My friend is driving like 8-10 hours in a few weeks for an interview, except his vehicle is pretty haggered and he'll need to rent a car, and the company will not pay for that.

I think the rate for driving compensation is 48.5 cents/mile (that's what I get paid anyway, haha).

I would just call or email them and ask nicely if they have a policy regarding compensation for the trips interviewees take to their company. "Hi, I'm curious if you have any sort of compensation for the interview trips to your company. I need to make a decision whether to fly or drive and would like some more information before I make my decision". That doesn't sound too "chumpy" to me. ;)

no way would I drive to an interview 10 hours away. I flew for one in St. louis from KC once. That was kinda fun.

I wouldn't start out on a lie...but they should have offered the ticket or mileage if they intended to cover it. WTF is the oil change about and you are going to have to eat anyway...you are not hired yet and are going to make yourself look like a mooch.

Clamum has good advice. Once they let you know then you need to make the decision. They may tell you they have no intention of covering it.

the mileage is IRS standard, which was ~45c/mi last year and is 48.5c this year.
if theyre inviting you to company, they should pay. which means yes they will reimburse you for mileage at that rate, or they should take care of your flight and lounging and meals. get it in writing, though

I'm going to fly now anyway. They said my airline ticket and hotel are prepaid, so it sounds like they will make the arrangements and send it to me, which is great. Not sure about meals and the cab ride but I don't want to sound cheap asking them to cover every single thing, and that stuff is not much money for even a small chance of getting a job.

I was just kind of interested in driving to stop on the way back to visit some friends (since the interview might be on a Friday), and I'd bank like $300. The reason I mentioned oil change is I thought things like that were covered in the mileage rate. Cause it's high as hell... even if I had a big ol 'ruck that got 15mpg, gas would still only cost like half of what the rate is.

You're right about eating anyway, heh, though guess I wouldn't mind a nice meal at some cool place in the city!
