My friend got this CPU from Newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116178

It was his first time building a computer, so since he was a n00b, his computer caught on fire.

I will be testing his CPU to see if it works, but he told me that his CPU does not have any broken pins or any burned areas and looks normal. If his CPU does not work, is it possible to request an RMA from Intel since it is still under warranty?

Try it on a different board first. And don't mention the fire to Intel. Intel will ask you alot of questions, and I would simply say that it failed to post, and you tried it in another motherboard, and it still wouldn't work. They will ask you for the board(s) make and model numbers to verify that the boards you're using are certified to run your cpu. I got a replacement in about 6 days, but it wasn't brand new.

I am wondering how his computer caught on fire myself! I will ask him the next time I see him.

Since we are into the fire story, there was one time I saw some wires from my PSU start to burn and smoke came out! But this was back then during the AMD K6 days and when I knew nothing about computers.

Does anybody know if a receipt is required to RMA a CPU, or are the numbers on the CPU all they require?
