i'm looking to buy a dimension 2400 from dell because of its cheap price, but it comes with an i845GL or 845GV chipset and intel integrated extreme graphics. the comp i'm looking at is a 2.8 ghz P4 with 512 RAM..and i'm wondering how good the video card is for gaming? would it be fine for games like warcraft 3, counter-strike, ea games...?

And also if i wanna upgrade the video card in the future, how would i be able to do so?

ya there is no point in trying to game with intel video, even old games like cs will choke bad. as for upgradeing video, there isn't much you can do there either as the motherboard doesn't have an agp slot and you are stuck with pic graphics, though a good pci card would be much beter than the intel. also, don't pay any mind to the geforcefx 5200s that dell offers with their more expensive computers, those cards have a 64bit memory bus and hence they suck bad as well. put simply, if you want a computer to play games well you are going to have to spend more money, and if you want to keep things cheap but still spend enough to get a decent gameing computer you are probably beter off buiding one yourself.

Read my post in this thread here.

a) Dells integrated video absolutely SUCKS. 16 mb video cards are better than that POS. its integrated AGP video, and its Extreme 2.... big deal. even though it has 64 mb, which you would think is decent, it stinks. absolutely positively sucks. i couldn't game sh*t with that.

get the 9100 pci if you can find it. you'll have more ram than me and your processor is slightly faster, so it will perform even better than my setup, and i'm happy. no choppiness, and nice playing.

go to sudhian.com and do a search under pci roundup and check out why the 9100 was rated #1. if you are an occasional gamer, and it sounds like you are, go ahead and get the dell computer, then buy yourself a radeon 9100 or 5200 from the stores. the 5200 has dx 9, and is more readily available, but i don't think its as fast as the radeon. btw, the 9100's are now kinda hard to come buy. you may wish to see if microcenter.com still has it. try to get either Sapphire or visiontek brand.

There have been several threads on this in the last week, and one currently discussing budget cards ON THE FRONT PAGE. Please search the forum.

There aren't really any good pci video cards. If you want a computer that is good at games then you have to get the 4600. The 2400 is meant as the cheapest computer possible. If you're a grandma that wants to email pictures of your grandchilden to other old people it is a fantastic system. If you want to play games it is not a good system; it has 266Mhz memory instead of 400Mhz, the video performance (more important than CPU for games) is horrible, and there isn't an option to get a decent graphics card. Really consider the 4600 or building your own system/buying from a local shop that can build one for you.
