If you have a windows installation that isn't working and you install windows on the same hd but in a differn't directory will it delete any files in documents and settings or will it leave all that data alone?

???
I do not understand what do you mean when you wrote : ?install windows on the same hd but in a differn't directory?

Are you trying to say that you wanted to install Windows in the same hard drive but different partition?

If you install Windows in different partition then fresh installation Windows will apply to the partition that you instructed Windows to install during installation process.

You did not format / deleted anything on other partition, then there is nothing change on that partition, all data on that partition is still there until you deleted it.

take care 🙂

I have a c: drive. It has windows installed on it in the windows folder. If you put in the windows XP cd you can select to install windows on the C: drive but in a differn't folder. leaving the other windows folder alone. However it still uses the folder called documents and setttings for users so I want to know if it will leave data alone that is located in documents and settings or if it will delete anything.

You can do what you asked, no files should be lost. I am not sure if things like your address book will remain intact though.

I take it that you do not back up regularly.
