Question about installation of Steam games

I have a few Steam games installed and running on my main gaming desktop. If I wanted to play the same games on a laptop, can I simply install Steam on the laptop and then copy all the relevant folders from the desktop, rather than download those several GBs of data again? Thanks in advance.
