When I finish Mass Effect 1, do I need to leave it installed when I start Mass Effect 2 in order to continue the character data? Or when I uninstall will it give me an option to save the game data, for that purpose?

THanks

Uninstalling ME1 or any game will not remove save files. Those have to be removed either from the game menu or from the gamefolder from the systems menu. But remember to uninstall the game from the My games menu and not by deleting its space from the system menu.

Mass Effect save data for all three games (and the Dragon Age game) are kept in My Documents/Bioware/(game name)/Save. If you uninstall the game it will ask you if you want to keep settings and saved game data; if you say yes or by some chance it doesn't ask, then the saved game data will all still be in My Documents.
