Question about HIDs and doing it right

TridenT

Lifer
I'm curious as to how one would convert their car's headlights to HIDs the right way? I think you all already know that I have a 2000 honda civic coupe. I've looked online to get an idea, but I am not really sure yet. I just see a lot of people who end up buying HID conversion kits and not getting new housing for the lights or anything. I don't know if you need new housing for the lights or what not, but I've seen people's cars without the projector housing (just the stock stuff instead) and it looks bad... The whole thing is just blooming with bright light and it kinda goes everywhere(Just looks bad, I find).

Anyway, just curious.

get an hid retrofit

it means, getting real oem projectors, ballast, and such and opening up your headlights, placing these inside, resealing them

www.hidplanet.com is your best bet for information from A to Z

I got mine done about a year ago (locally), bought all parts from that forum and got all my info there too

There are effectively only two ways to do it right:

1) If your car had available HIDs go get the factory parts for the conversion.
2) Buy a different car that already has factory HIDs.

Anything else is at best a nuisance to everyone else and possibly downright dangerous.

Or you can do a retrofit the proper way, that also works and ends up being as good as OEM (if done right!)

I do not support throwing in hid bulbs into reflector housings..

Thats really the best alternative. Ive seen people with drop-in ebay kits.. they look like $h!t. Oh and of course you blind everyone.

However, a true retrofit is not usually cheap and it definitely takes some time to do it right

It can be cheap if you really know what you are doing, and you do it yourself.

Otherwise it can be incredibly expensive fast..

Figure out what parts you want, wait for deals on the forum or other car forums.. buy the parts. Find someone good to do it for a good rate, or then do it yourself if you can do it!

Labor can range from 300 to 1000+ depending on who you get, or how intense of a job you want.

Part can range from 300 to 600+ depending on what parts you choose 😉

I paid just over 800CDN inclusive
TSX Projectors, Denso Ballast, 85122 Phillips bulbs, e46 replica shrouds, wiring harness, + labor

You could try and find Philips HIR bulbs, I didnt want to spend the 1k to buy the OEM VW HID kit so I just got these off ebay (come standard on Euro market VWs anyway) and snapped them in, Its about 90% of what HIDs are so i'm happy enough with them.

Thats in your new Jetta TDI right? The GTI had HID projectors I assume.

Are those Philips any better than Silverstars? I have a set of Silverstars and a set of Osram Nightbreakers, they are both WAY better than OEM

Yea not worth it IMO unless you drive at night all the time and a lot.

Just get the brighter bulbs like silverstar type.

Get the H4 bulbs. It crosses to the 9003 you need. If you get the 35w, 6k is the best....if you upgrade to 55w, get 8k because the color washes out, and it will look like 6k.

People on this site will hate you for getting these, but...oh well 😛 I put the 35w Raptors in my car and I can see twice as far, everything is brighter, I love it. Of course, I modified my housings so it doesn't glare out a ton, but I doubt you want to bake your headlights to get rid of some reflective material, lol. (I blacked out the HOUSINGS, and removed some of the reflective material from the upper and lower surfaces, so the light has more of a forward projection rather than scattering everywhere.)

I have NEVER been flashed by anyone for having these lights, even before I modified my housings. They aren't bright enough to blind people, just a helluva lot cleaner light than my stock silverstars. The cutoff is pretty good as well.

I'm sure you guys will love to know that I'm putting some in my fog lights, too. 😛

So much fail in this post...

nowai!

like i said, im building projectors, it's just taking a while because I'm retarded with molding acrylic. I'm NOT spending 500+ for someone to make me some, when the car isn't even worth 2.5k. Until then, I'd like to see. <3

I got a set of projector headlights for my car, and got HIDs to go in them. They technically aren't "HID" projectors but they work great with them, don't blind oncoming traffic at all (actually have less glare than my stock halogen reflectors did), and have a decent cutoff and beam pattern. A true HID projector would be better most likely but for how much I paid in total (around $250-ish) I have no complaints.

Not fully on topic but related, is there any specific reason something like this would be classified as junk?

I have been looking for something black for the truck and these halo's fit the bill pretty well. Though it doesn't say what color the halo's are.. I'd assume these are just drop in.

LOL @ JDM sierra..

well usually the housings aren't of great quality, projector bowls are bad and can melt, they dont use D2S, may or may not have cutoff shield

I hope the cops pull you and cite you for those pieces of shit.

Another place to shop, and for some infighting reason between HID Planet and TRS, they won't talk about each other.

Haha. I admit to knowing next to nothing about lighting mods to be honest. I just did an initial search. Why is JDM bad?

I can't seem to find anything else. The truck has a very defined black/white theme going on and I'd like to fit some projectors on but cost isn't necessarily an issue.. just finding the parts. =P Suggestions?
