Question about Gear Ratios

Get the tallest gear you can. You'll appreciate it on the highway. Unless you're going to race you don't need the shorter gears and will regret getting them most of the time.

With a 0.65:1 overdrive 6th gear in the Mustang there's really no reason not to get the 3.73 rear end. The overdrive ratio in the transmission itself is so ridiculously tall that even a short final drive like a 3.73 is still going to yield relaxed cruising on the freeway. Remember, even with the 3.73 rear end, the GT still only turns 2,000 RPM at 70 mph; that's pretty leisurely for a sportscar.

I have the 2nd worst gear ratio offered by Chrysler: 2.45

To get anything better I need to swap the axle. That is what I am pricing out now. I think a set of 3.55's would work best. The next step up is 3.90's and I think that would be too much of a good thing.

Another vote for a 3.73 ratio. My car has 4.10 but it has no OD. But on a car that has a 6 speed? You have to go with the 3.73. Big deal if it will "only " do 135+ top speed. Where you going to do 135 at anyways. I'm sure you wouldn't buy a Mustang because your looking to get 35MPG anyways. And I would bet the MPG difference is minimal at best between the 2 gear ratios.

You want killer exceleration yet good hiway manners, get the 3.73.. you want good MPG, get a Prius. 😉
