Question about food allergies

I seem to be developing an allergy to shellfish, but it's been hard to confirm the cause because the timing of the reactions have been very inconsistent. For instance, the last time I ate some clams, I had a reaction 36 hours later. Is it possible for the reaction to take that long, especially if you don't eat much of the item?

No, i'm pretty sure a reaction will be almost immediate. I am allergic to shellfish, and the one thing i've learned is that each shellfish is its own animal. I am allergic to lobster and shrimp, but I can eat crab, clams, and scallops. I can tell within a few seconds of eating whether I am allergic. My mouth will start to swell up a little, and then my breathing will get tight. If I am unsure of a food I will take a tiny bit of it and just stick it on my lip. If my lip doesn't start to swell up, I am usually OK to eat it.

After 36 hours i'm pretty sure the item has completely worked its way through your system. There should be no way you would get a reaction that long after.

Allergic reactions do not take 36 hours to occur. They are almost immediate(less than 4 hours at the high end).

I AM NOT A DOCTOR SO TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK:
Recent research has indicated that if you aren't deathly allergic you could self medicate. Not avoiding the allegens is the best way to get the body to adjust and not overreact to allergens. There was a study of children deathly allergic to peanuts. They slowly introduced peanuts into their diet. As long as they maintained their diet of including peanuts, they no longer had reactions. They bumped up the dosage over 6 months. By the end, they had to eat a small amount of peanuts every week to maintain their tolerance for it.

This suggests that our body can learn to deal with allergens if consistently exposed. The issue is that most people cut out allergens completely. Then when they actually accidentally consume the allergen, they have a worse reactions.

Food allergies are however nothing to mess around with in general. Just because your reaction isn't life threatening doesn't mean the next time it won't be.

recent scientific studies show that 96% of allergies are based off of fear of getting allergies. Scientists say that not enough clinical trials have been documented to link peanuts or shellfish with spontaneous- aggressive allergic reactions.

i have no evidence to back up this claim

That's a load of BS. Why would kids ever even develop allergies then? You can't be afraid of something you don't even know exists. They don't even know what they are. They just react to a food.

I used to love eating lobster when I was a kid, then all the sudden one day I just had a reaction to it.

maybe you were afraid of lobsters as a kid. u probably forgot. ask your parents

What was your reaction?

Swelling around my mouth usually, although once it made its way up to my eyes.

It seems pretty likely oysters are a problem, both times I've gotten a reaction - although both times it took about 8 hours. I still don't know if that is too long. I can't think of any other foods that could be causing the problem.
