How much would this actually set me back and is this a decent deal?

Half-Day Fishing Trip
$19

Bait included; Rod rental not included • Fishing license not included; customers 16+ must have a fishing license • Excludes fuel surcharge • Entire value must be used in a single visit • Other conditions apply

Shooting fish in a barrel may be easy, but catching them in their natural habitat is more of a challenge -- and a lot more fun. Discover just how many fish there are in the sea with today's deal. For $19 (regularly $42), get a half-day fishing trip from Newport Landing Sportfishing. Meet at the docks just off of Balboa Boulevard. Then, drop anchor and sink your hook into calico bass, sand bass, barracuda, bonito, and halibut. These Coast Guard-licensed skippers have extensive knowledge of local fishing routes, and they'll ensure you get the most action out of your saltwater excursion as possible when they whisk you away on their fast, state-of-the-art boats. You can bring your own rod and fishing license or purchase them on site -- these pros will supply the bait. If you're up for the challenge, this offer is an easy catch.

I have never gone fishing before ^_^

Doesn't sound like a BAD deal. I don't know how much rod/reel rental is...maybe $5-10 for the day...and a one-day license is about $14.

I love deep-sea fishing. I used to go at least twice per month out of the Emeryville and Berkeley marinas.
Monterey is also fun, but you're usually fishing in MUCH deeper water...so more waiting and cranking...

One other thing...if you've never been out, you MIGHT want to check into the "seasick patch" that requires a prescription from your doctor.

My curiosity got to me ... why do you need to purchase a fishing license? In Florida you do not require a license to fish in salt water. Is this just a Cali requirement?

Other than that it sounds like a good deal?

I dont trust businesses that neglect to disclose the entire fee for a typical trip/service upfront. WTF is a fuel surcharge? Build that shit into your prices instead of nickel and diming.

in CA you need to apply for a license to masturbate.

Fishing licenses are free money, the states that don't require licenses for salt water will require them someday soon.

$19 for a fishing trip is good, but as always, look out for the hidden fees and other "gotcha!" charges.

How much is rod and reel rental? Is it mandatory?
What's the fuel surcharge?
What bait is included? Is it one spoiled can of corn and will stuff that actually catches fish cost extra?
What other conditions apply?
Can you bring your own food and beverages or do you have to buy theirs?

I'm betting a $19 fishing trip really costs $75-$100.

Only one way to find out...call first.

Rod and reel rental is almost never REQUIRED, but available if you need it.
Bait is usually appropriate for the species the boat is going out to catch...anchovies and squid are very common.
You can bring your own food and drink...but be careful...a first-timer probably should be careful what he eats/drinks...or else he'll just be over the rail, chumming.

A bit of "google-fu" finds the following link:

http://www.newportlanding.com

Half-day trips are normally $41.50.

No coolers or ice chests are permitted, and no outside alcohol is permitted either.

A FUEL SURCHARGE MAY BE IN EFFECT IF MARINE DIESEL EXCEEDS
$4.00 PER GALLON. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY CAUSE.
