Question about file size on transfer

Hi,

I just hooked up my old hdd to my new system to transfer some stored software. I did a simple drop and drag of a folder that was 13.6 gb's to start and after it was transferred, it was 21.4 gb's? Does anyone have any idea why this would happen?

This is in WinXP Pro btw.. I tried transferring this folder twice and I got the same results. I thought that maybe it wasn't showing up accurately at first because the old hdd was in my new computer, but when I put the drive back in my old computer, the folder was 13.6 gb's. Any idea why the folder is getting larger when I transfer it?

I don't care if it takes up extra space, I just want to be sure that the files are being corrupted or something and rendering the files useless after transfer.

TIA,

Sal

Does anyone have an idea why a file would be larger once it is transferred to a new drive? All I did was drag and drop the file into an empty folder on my new drive. I can't figure out why the file would be larger, especially 6-7 gb's larger. I tried it twice and got the same exact results.

Let me know?

Anyone? I've never had this happen before. I'm paranoid about wiping the original hard drive clean now because there is a descrepency in file size. I've been trying to see if the files that have been transferred are in tact and work properly and everything seems fine so far. I just don't know for sure though.

Any ideas?

Sorry for posting again, but I'd like some sort of definitive answer, so I can wipe this hard drive clean and move on.

Different cluster size... Does the new drive have large clusters? Was the HD full of lots of small files?

The new hard drive seems to have more files and it's taking up more space.

BTW.. The old hard drive that showed the folder as 16.1 gb's is a 40 gb 7200 rpm Maxtor and the new hard drive is a Western Digital WD1200JB drive and shows 21 gb's for the same folder after the file transfer. Both drives have WinXPPro installed on them and both are formatted with FAT32.

Does it still sound like a difference in cluster size? That would be weird. I upgraded the size of the hard drive, but if a 16 gb file turns into a 21 gb file, I'm really not getting 3x the size of a drive then, am I?

I'm not sure how this works. I'm just trying to make sense of this.

Thanks again.

Ok.. If nobody knows why I have two different folder sizes once I drag and drop the files to the new drive, could someone please recommend a piece of software that I can use to ensure that the original folder ends up in tact on the new drive?

I was thinking Ghost, but isn't that software for cloning the entire drive? I don't know..

I'd also like something that doesn't work in DOS. I'm not too comfortable with DOS commands.

Thanks again.
