Question about DVI connection

I just got an 18.1" Gateway LCD monitor with DVI. I have the Radeon 8500 videocard. The DVI cable that came with the monitor seems to have 2 arrays of 9 pins each. My videocard's DVI input is incompatable having an array of 24 holes and a separate array of 4 holes. What product do I need to fix this?

There is no need to fix.

Your DVI cable is a DVI-D cable, which only transfer digital signals. Just plug it in and you will see better image quality comparing with D-sub you are currently using.

where do I plug it into? My videocard does not have a DVI-D jack? Am I missing something?

If it doesn't fit the DVI connector on the card, then you ain't got a DVI plug on your monitor cable.

Are you telling me there is only 1 kind of DVI jack? So what is this? It isn't VGA. There's a separate VGA connector. And this cable says DVI on it, but it won't plug into the videocard. There's got to be an answer here.

Yes, there is only one connector shape for DVI. This connector might offer both digital and analog signal (DVI-I) or just digital (DVI-D) - but the connector is the same.

There's a much less widespread digital LCD connection called DFP. this has two rows of ten contacts each.

Thanks for the reply. I remain confused.

The monitor specs say it has DVI-D. The cable that comes with it says "DVI Digital Single Link Shuttle-C' whatever that means. It has 3 sets of pins. Two identical square sets that are each 3 by 3, so 2 sets of 9 for 18 pins. The third is a single "long" pin, for lack of a better description.


The videocard is a Radeon 8500. It has a jack back there (next to the standard VGA jack) that has as follows. 3 rows of 8 holes = 24 holes. A separate 2x4 block of holes = 4 holes for a total of 28.

Which of these specs fit with DVI-D? Neither seem consistent with DFP.

I figured it out. I'm a moron. I had trouble getting the male into the female, probably because I just didn't have them properly lined up. Then when I looked I saw the number of pins was different and assuming incompatability. The monitor has a DVI-D connection and the Radeon 8500 has a DVI-I jack, with more hole to accomodate an analog signal. But, they are compatible. Thanks for the replies.
