question about DVDs

I guess this is the right place to ask, since its about storage.

Anyway, I burn a lot of data DVDs as back ups for, and I've been noticing that randomly my discs fail. Many of them have been burned less than 2 years ago, and are rarely ever accessed, they just sit on a spindle. If I try to copy data, some of it won't copy over and it says "redundancy error." Now my question is, is this normal for data to go bad on discs and not be able to be copied over (it still reads when I try to read it straight from the disc), or is it possible that maybe my burner is bad and producing crappy discs? I use a variety of brands of DVD, memorex, GQ, Fujifilm..etc so it can't be one brand thats bad, because it seems to happen with all of em.

That's what is called a CRC error and is usually the result of a bad disc that cannot easily be read.

If the problem is occurring with all the media you try, you may want to look at the software and burner. So which burner and which software and at what speed are you burning the media? Are you "closing" the discs when you burn?

John

my burner is a Pioneer, its under 2 years old, and I use the nero program that came with the burner. I close the discs, and I usually burn at 8x

If you check around, you'll find reports of folks losing data because they relied on burned DVD's or CD's as their only backups. Burned disks aren't nearly as reliable as pressed disks.
