Question about Duron system

BUilding a new system.. looking at an ABIT KT-7 non raid board... (is that right?) with a duron 600.... First off, if I pick up a 600 is it going to be unlockable? either with the pencil trick or other means? or if I spend the extra 20 bucks or so to get a 750 duron. is that one going to do the trick and be overclockable?

also, is there special memory one has to buy for a duron based system? what about power supply?

all questions.... apreciate any and all answers.

oh ya, and best heatsink? to get that thing a cookin....

The KT7 is a great choice for overclocking Socket A Processors. I have my TBird 700@1000 right now, and my Duron 700@1063 before that. You can expect Durons to OC ~300. The pencil trick works great, and doesnt cost you any money. Another good thing about it is that if you need to return your CPU for some reason within the warranty period, you can always erase the lines. For memory, i'd definetely be sure to have some PC133 CL2 RAM. It doesnt matter what brand it is, just make sure it's CL2, as it is required for AMD CPUs. For a Power Supply, i'd get at leist a 300w. It would be even better if it has two fans. For HSFs, nothing beats the GlobalWIN FOP38. It may be a little noisy, but some good speakers will drown it out easily

I agree with youon the memory. But, I'd say get an Alpha heatsink/fan.

I have about the same system you described. ABIT KT7-NON RAID, DURON 600 @ 1001 with the #2 pencil. I could only do 904 stable with the stock HS/fan but with the TaiSol CEK733 I can hit 1 Gig and it is actually cooler.

As for memory, I run my memory at FS+PCI. My Bus is at 110/36 and while your milage may vary, I have two sticks of Kingston 133 ValueRam that runs CAS2 with no trouble. You can get that for about $80.00 a stick now.

Gotta love AMD !!!!

Since when does an AMD system require Cas2 Ram ? I know a lot of people who still use their CL3 Ram in their Athlon system...

To answer yor question on 600 vs. 750:

Both are packaged identically and you should have no problem unlocking either one. I would, however, recommend something other than the pencil for a permamanent solution. Many people have experienced problems where the pencil degrades over time and causes instability. It works fine for testing though, so long as the pencil is fresh.

Also, what about the 650? Its only $5 more than the 600.
