Question about dual core

I currently have a 939 A64 3000+ single core system. I own a Nikon film scanner that scans 35mm slides and when it's operating each scan, my CPU utilization goes to 100%. I cannot use my computer for any other tasks because the computer slows to a halt during each scan.

I was wondering if a Core 2 Duo processor would allow the scanner to 100% utilize one core and allow me to still use the computer for simple tasks like browsing the web and responding to e-mail with the other. Does dual core allow this?

Just a thought, but if your only need for a dual core CPU is to have one core handle the Nikon scanner, why get a Core 2 Duo? You can save a ton of money by getting a s939 X2 instead (such as the X2-3800+).

Or you could just set the process priority to low.

The process would take longer but if the time factor is not a problem for you, then this might be a viable solution.

I agree. As long as processing the film isn't time sensitive (i.e. doesn't need to be done as FAST as possible), i'd say upgrade from single core to dual core X2 or opty.

I know, Darn 939...that socket sure didn't last long! I purchased the x2 3800 and another 1 gig of ram. Hopefully I will notice a difference. 🙂
