Question about DSL

I have a phone line in my apartment but it is not activated. I only have a cell phone. Every DSL site I've checked wants my phone number to check availibility. Even DSLreports.com wants a phone number in spite of asking for a street address.

Do I have to have a phone activated to get DSL, and if not how do I go about checking availibility?

All you need is local telephone service ... so one of your local carriers.. find one that also offers dsl service.. they might have a package

Yep, TwinkleToes, TwinkleKNOWS! SBC has great plans if you're switching back to them or maybe even from another service. See if you ca sweet talk the representative into fixing you up.

I took a quick look at SBC (Ameritech) and they have a plan for $0.50 a month. You get 30 local calls. I assume DLS has nothing to do with the phone. It just uses the same wiring right?

If I got one of these super cheap plans and just left the phone unplugged (just used DSL) this would work right? Using DSL would not count as one of the 30 calls?

DSL can operate over a dry pair, but the telco won't sell it to you that way.

You will need to have a POTS line with the provider of the DSL line.

Yeah, call back and tell them what you need, DSL only, and they'll tell you the best package that can be put together.

Any chance you can drop that cell phone? That would probably pay for the DSL right there! You'll have a land line after all. How did you live without the cell before? I don't own one. Hell, I don't don't answer the phone here at my desk, let alone having people calling me everywhere I go!

No I need the cell phone. I travel occasionally for work and by my self in the summertime. I got the cell instead of a land line for that very reason.

As far as getting calls everywhere I go, just because my cell rings doesn't mean I have to answer it. :p

Wishful thinking? BTW it is possible, but phone companies don't allow it I guess.
