question about dorm networking

in my dorm there is an ethernet cable that i can connect to in my dorm to get internet. the dorms do not have wireless. what would i need to be able to have wireless access in my whole dorm building, or at least part of it? would i need a wireless access point or router? how is it setup?

Get yourself a wireless router. A cat5 cable will go from teh wall to the rout's internet input. Then you plug your PC into any of the other inputs. Follow the instuctions on the instalation of the router if you want to protect it so others can't use the wireless conenction.

Have you checked to see if there are any availible access points near you? Wouldn't surprise me if others near you already have a wireless router connected and unprotected.

Most colleges detect wireless routers and turn them off. You may want to find out first if they are allowed.

Well obviously it depends on the university. You should definitely check first if it's allowed and if it is, get a wireless router!
