question about copyrighting your own music

I'm in a band and we're just getting started off. We've written quite a bit of music and the last thing we want is hearing our song on the radio played by someone else. My question is about the first paragraph on the above link, how much truth is in that? Anyone here had any experience with this?

Record your music, and mail it to yourself. That way the postmark date shows when you created it. Leave the package sealed. That should be enough proof if you ever have to challenge a copyright violation.

it isn't the d/ling part of it, it's someone actually ripping off our song and saying that they wrote it and such.
