Question about cooling a XP 2000+

Hi,

I was running a XP 1800+ with a Alpha 8045 and a PC Power and Cooling Silencer rated at 28 cfm and 20 db. It cooled my chip fine.

Now.. I am going to swap some parts over to another machine and I'm going to be running a XP 2000+ instead of the XP 1800+. How much hotter does the XP2000+ run than the 1800+? Can I run the same setup on the 2000+ that I was running on the 1800+?

BTW.. I seem to remember a guy running a XP 1800+ and a 19.4 cfm /12 db Papst fan on his Alpha 8045. That isn't much air on that chip.

Anyway.. TIA.

At www.sandpile.org, the listing shows:

  • 1800+ with Palomino core: 66.0W maximum
  • 2000+ with Palomino core: 70.0W maximum
  • 1800+ with Thoroughbred core: 51.0W maximum
  • 2000+ with Thoroughbred core: 60.3W maximum

The Thoroughbred cores may cruise at higher temperatures despite their lower actual heat production, due to their higher heat-to-surface-area ratio. At any rate, the stock AMD fans only move about 21cfm, so I'd think you're safe in reusing your existing setup.

Thanks for the reply. How do I know if I have a Palomino or Thoroughbred core? Is there a marking on the chip?

I asked this question on another forum. I have a stock hs/f from a retail 1800+ that I didn't use. I'm selling a system with a OEM 2000+ and wanted to use the stock hs/f from the retail 1800+ package. Do you know if I could get away with this or if there is a different hs/f for the 2000+ retail package?

Thanks again.

How to spot a Thoroughbred

You might use the "See It!" feature at Newegg to visually compare the heatsinks of the 2000+, I haven't seen one myself. AMD sometimes changes their retail heatsink supplier too, it looks like... none of the retail 1800+'s I've gotten recently come with the little Dynatron micro-fin heatsinks anymore. I understand that the Thoroughbreds may come with copper-bottomed heatsinks in order to help get heat away from the smaller core more efficiently.

Thanks for the replies. I think I have a Palomino core without even looking at it.

Where can I find one of these cheap Igloo hs/f?

I really sort of need to know about the hs/f differences between the retail package 1800+ and the 2000+ because I promised a retail hs/f to the buyer of my OEM 2000+ and I don't want to give him a retail hs/f that won't effectively cool a 2000+. Does anyone have any information or know where I can get the information on the differences between the two hs/f combos?

Thanks again.

From some pics at Newegg (link), it appears that they are using the micro-finned Dynatron, probably with the copper base like this one. Personally, I would get one of these beauties for it, they have the triple-tab clip and AMD-approved phase-change thermal compound.

Ok.. I'm pretty well convinced that the stock retail hs/f for the XP1800+ will not work for the XP2000+. Thanks.
