Question about commuting into NYC from NJ

I recently secured an internship for this summer. This is great, especially because I applied thinking I'd never get it. I'm really quite happy, however I have a problem. I need to show up at work at 4am. I was looking at the NJ transit website and it seems the earliest I could get into Penn Station is 5:22am, which is way too late. I could drive, but preliminary estimates show that parking my car in the city could cost over $1000.

Do you guys know of any way I could commute into Manhattan from NJ so that I could be at work by 4am? Are there trains/buses that run in earlier that I'm just not seeing?

From where in NJ? The PATH train runs 24 hours a day - you can access it from Hoboken or Newark Penn. Station. If you're against parking in NYC, you can park in either of those cities and take the PATH in.

If so, the path is quite easy. Takes about 10 minutes to get from hoboken to downtown, not sure about the other stops

you can stay in the nyu dorms for ~800-1k per month, alot of kids with internships in the city rent them over the summer.

If that's the case, then he would've just used the car, right?

Probably cheaper to stay in the dorms.

You gotta factor in gas/toll/parking GWB toll went up.. I'm pretty sure the Lincoln tunnel went up as well.

path is the only service that runs 24/7 from NJ that I'm aware of... only trick is going to be getting to the path train, depending on where you live.

Tunnel is 8 bucks to enter the city now. If you have a place already in Jersey i'd say take the path in the city, but if you're coming to the area for the summer, just like in one of the dorms- especially if you need to be in at 4am.

Similar situation... I gotta get into hoboken from rutgers by 8:30am, my internship is a block away from the train station. I'm thinking getting monthly passes on njtransit (149/month) and a monthly pass on the path (50/month). Room in brunswick is about 450 a month.. seem like a decent idea?

the commute is gonna suck.
have you looked into getting a room near by hoboken ?

Possibly jersey city / weehawken / Union / North Bergen

I dunno, its only 10 weeks (unless i get a full time offer) and I could easily get the place for the summer in rutgers with my friends.

you are right though, the commute to get there at off peak hours (like noon) was over an hour, though i did waste time trying to figure out what the hell i was doing at each station.

Basically 40 minutes from new brunswick to newark penn station and ~40 minutes for path to exhange place, path to hoboken. This is assuming the trains dont stop for 10-15 minutes for no reason
like they did the first trip..

wtf kind of work requires you to be there at 4 AM?

i'm going to blind guess some sort of media/broadcasting position (mainly since i used to work a similar schedule years ago)

Didn't the $8 commuter fee for vehicles to get into NYC just pass yesterday? Wonder when that's going to start.

The Path train looks like my best bet, thanks guys! Parking near Newark Penn Station should be significantly cheaper than parking in Manhattan, and I'd only be paying $1.30 per ride on the train, which is a lot cheaper than what I would have been paying for NJ transit anyway. ATOT has come to the rescue once again!

And for those wondering what kind of internship requires me to be there at 4am, look no further than LizardBoy's guess. It is in the media/broadcasting industry, however they specifically told me not to post on any forums about my position, so I cannot reveal any more details.

At those hours in those locations, you best bring a gun, and don't get jack or double fisted.

You got an internship at CBS learning the ropes at The Early Show?

Gotta get in at 4am so you can make coffee for the real workers who come in later eh?

Something like that...we'll see.

I'm not 21 and I really don't feel like carrying a rifle around. I shall look into investing in some sort of defense, though.
