I was at St. Thomas yesterday and it appeared that people had them in their yards like pets. Yet another way to express cocks at home.

The term isn't just used for chickens, it's used across a number of species including pheasants, quail, etc.
Ducks are Drakes and Geese are Ganders, and Turkeys are Gobblers (after they are Jakes).
