Question about cheaters in pc gaming

How long has a cheater been able to play on VAC or Punkbuster servers without getting caught?

If you visit sites like http://www.pbbans.com/ and http://www.vacbanned.com/ you get the sense that a lot of cheating players get caught and banned.

I wonder how long has anyone been able to cheat without getting caught? Could some cheaters use hacks for a year on a certain game and not get caught at all?

With the MD5 tools that anti hacks use how can someone could cheat for so long and not get caught.

I suppose one of the ways could be using private hacks that only minimum people use so they never get passed to the developers of anti cheat programs.

Anyone here have a personal experience he doesn't mind sharing with us and maybe telling us how long he was able to cheat online and not get caught and if/when he was caught?

I typically dont like to cheat because it ruins my sense of pride in the game. I feel shameful when I use cheats.

My guess is most people are "caught" pretty quickly. I would think that the majority of cheaters use a public hack - and if its public, you can be sure that vac/punkbuster know about it as well.

these are my observations. I think PB gets updated often enough (in Bad Company 2 at least) that hacks aren't very long lived. hacks seem to be more long lived in VAC while I was actively playing TF2.

anyways, there is still stuff like forcing LODbias to increase to make the game look monotone and more sparse, which I'm not sure if PB or VAC actually checks for.

PB, don't know about.

VAC is designed to prevent false bans, and is designed with the idea that it's better to let cheaters slide then to ban someone falsely. As a result, it's engineered only for known confirmed hacks.

So, VAC actually takes a good while, AFAIK, and it *intentionally* delays the ban til some point in time after the offense, specifically to make figuring out countermeasures difficult as the trigger is not obvious.

From what I understand, VAC is done after valve or whomever is able to positively identify the cheat.

It seems like an initial coder could use a cheat forever and never get caught as long as no one notices and reports him, and he doesn't release it.

However, just about anything you download and run to cheat will result in a ban, which is a good thing.

In the grand scheme of PC gaming I would say that 98% of the time the person you think is cheating actually isn't. They are just better than you. Now what you must do is learn from what they are doing, and then mimic it.

I remember back in the Cod1 days I was pretty good but I thought everyone cheated. Then I watched some frag movies from lans and saw what was possible and found that I started playing much differently.

I don't need an aimbot or a wallhack because I'm so used to my mouse, and I use sound to my advantage. I get accused of hacking in every cod4 server I play in.
