question about car insurance...

I am a current United States Navy member. Before I went into the military I sold my car and completely canceled my car insurance. I am scheduled to go to sea and have 0 need for a car in the next 5 years. If I decide to make the navy a career and do without a car for the next 20 years, is there any downfall in this? As far as the fact that the longer you drive the more discounted insurance you'll get. I know that part of what you pay for a insurance premium is based on your age. Do they still base it on age if you haven't been driving for all the years?

If you're over 25, you get a discount, regardless of how much you've been driving.

However, if you haven't had continuous insurance for the past year or so, it costs more, because insurance companies can't seem to grasp the fact that there are legitimate reasons not to have car insurance for a period of time.

but how costly will it be, ill still get some kinda break on price right?

I mean I won't be paying the same amount as people ages 18-21 pay for car insurance will I?

It won't be too bad
<<<<------- (6 years in navy)

You will probably own a few beaters while your stationed on a ship.
They come in handy between cruises, just sell the beater before you leave.
Just get a local DL so when you get out your record will not follow you home.

If you have just cause for not needing a car, you will be find when you get back. You will not have to suffer for not having prior insurance because you had no "need" for it.
When you choose to get ins. the next time, they might need verification that you were in the service, but you will be fine.

Now, if you just let your insurance lapse beacuse you didnt feel like paying for it... well, that is another story

Depends on state. You come back virtually as a prohbationary driver. A friend of mine in NJ cancelled his insurance for 1-2 years. He lived and worked in Philly, and didn't have a need for a car at the time. When he moved back to the suburbs, the insurance companies slapped him with a 3000+ premium. His record was clean at the time. After a few months, he found NJ Cure, who then lowered his insurance to the 2000 range.

I paid it all off before canceling and even gave the insurance company advance notice of my choice to go into the military. They knew ahead of time and allowed me to cancel my insurance. I am just looking out for the long run to make sure I can still benefit with lower priced insurance then what I used to pay once I get out or decide to drive again. (im 21 now btw and have a good driving record *1 ticket only a yr ago* and I paid it off and haven't had any since)

The state is PA btw

Do you know where you will be stationed?

I found less need for a car in SanDiego.
Great trolly and lots of friends with cars.

I am a submariner so its going to be one of the few submarine bases, aka SanDiego, Hawaii, Washington (state), Virginia, Flordia, Georgia I won't know for a couple more weeks of my exact perminent duty station for the next 5 years until i finish submarine school.

In the first two, you can do pretty well without a car.
Don't know about the rest.

Good luck!
