question about bypassing Windows ICS

I've got a friend that lives at his parents house, and his dad is paranoid about network security.

The trouble is, my friend's dad doesn't know squat about network security.(In truth, he thinks he knows, which is worse than knowing that you don't know.)

He's got his network set up as follows:

every evening, after his dad gets off the internet, he logs off of his computer. The trouble is, when his dad logs off, it shuts down all the network connections, and internet goes bye-bye.
Is there a way that we can make his dad's computer keep all the network connections while the computer is logged off, so he can stay on the internet? The friend is 25 years old, it's not an issue of parental rules or anything.

I've also suggested for him to set up a wireless NIC on his computer and just connect to a neighbors house, he hasn't got the funds together for that.

I've also suggested putting a hardware router between the cable modem and the dad's computer, and plugging his line into the router, but his dad would notice something like that.

anyone else have any better solutions? Preferably something that would keep him from having to rely on his dad's computer for his internet access.

It is an issue of parental rules. He's living with his parents he can live with their rules. Or get his own internet connection. 😛

He's 25 and can't afford a $25 NIC?

He should get a job, move out, and not worry about it. 😛

it's really not an issue of rules, as far as I can tell. I dont' want to get into flames or anything, but in my opinion, his dad really doesn't know what he's doing. My friend has asked his dad to use a router instead of ICS, and his dad tells him that a router will get him hacked, but he leaves his comptuer on 24/7 with a direct cable connection.

When have you bought a decent PCI wireless NIC and antenna for under $25? Please let me know.
I agree about the moving out part, but hey, you can only help out a guy so much.

I'm doubting that the son brought the issue up in a constructive way...

I didn't say under $25, the ones I just bought were $25.50.

I am not sure what you are looking for. If you switch off Server/Router/what ever there is No technical solution to maintain connection.

If your friend can not convince the father and does not have money to go on his own it seems more of a Social problem rather than a computer network forum problem.

The best choice would be to set it up with the modem connected to the WAN/Internet port on a broadband router, and all of the PCs connected to LAN ports (or wireless) on the router. Then the Dad can turn his computer off completely at night if he wants to, and the NAT firewall in the router will provide connectivity 24/7 (as long as the router stays turned on), will likely provide much better protection than what is on the network currently, and Dad won't have to use ICS at all on his PC...
