Question about buying a webcam..also using my vidcam as one

hello, im looking into getting a webcam for my mom but since i dont have one im unclear as to what would be best. She has cable internet so connection would be fine, but i dont have one so im not sure what to look for.

Also, I have a mini-dv cam with a firewire card..is that all I need to use my cam as one or do i need some sodt of vid cap card? Thanks
