Question about Best Buy

Are they allowed to stop you as you exit there store to check your receipt after you just went thru the checkout ?

I'm pretty sure they can, as it is private property. You don't seem too pleased that this is/was done?

The best buy I worked at was allowed to. It had double doors so they were allowed to stop you until you got through the second set of doors. However, once you were through the second set of doors only Mall Security (mall owners owned the parking lot) were allowed to stop you.

Once the item has been transferred into the property of the buyer, they have no right to stop or check you.

You do not have to wait for them to check your bag...same with costco. But they do check if you have everything on your receipt or if you have something extra. And if the metal detector rings while you're passing through, i believe they do have a right to search you if they believe you're shoplifting.

Hmm... I don't think so since you paid for it and its your property now. I let them check it, but if theres a line, don't fuggen expect me to waste my time for you to look at my receipt and make some stupid highlighter mark on it.

yes, if they have belief that you might have been over/undercharged, or that you might have stolen something or otherwise not have paid for it. but "just because?" no.

this needs further explanation. it is a minor inconvenience to me, one that i have no problem putting up with because i do not steal items from stores, and i realize that those who do increase the cost of whatever i buy in the future. moreover, many people leave the checkout counter without everything they paid for and haven't realized it, thereby losing money.

checking receipts on your way out of a store accomplishes the following:
1) safeguards against shoplifting
2) safeguards against leaving merchandise/being charged for items not purchased

i think an extra 10 seconds is worth that to me.

Technically, a best buy employee can't stop you from doing anything. You could walk out of the store with unpaid merchendise, they can't stop you themselves. So you don't have to show them the receipt, but they have every right to ask.

Ahh, where are all these lawyers and legal experts coming from? If you feel as if your constitutional rights were violated in some way, get a lawyer. This is America after all.

Did the rescind the law for citizen's arrest?

I just know that we aren't allowed to apprehend customers at CC, so I would imagine BB is the same way.

They can try, but you have every legal right to ignore them & continue walking.

In most states, after you have exchanged money for products, and passed the last POS (point of sale), the item is yours, and they cannot force you to show it to them.

They can however request you wait for the police.

I'll stop if there is no line but I am not stopping if there is. I sometimes get looks and people calling out to me but I keep walking. I am not waiting in line twice when I am giving them my money.

So what's the answer? There's so many conflicting responses here it's making my head spin.

I'd love to walk right past the guy and completely ignore him if I knew it was my legal right to.

Which CC do you work at? I need a few things.

It is. Company Policy. If they touch you, they get fired.

Here the Target does more than ask 🙂

I know one of the security guys there and they have tackled and fought people in the parking lot before because of suspected shoplifting.

Note to self: Don't mess with the Target employees 😛

If they put their hands on me there will be a fight. But then I don't steal so I have nothing to worry about.

So if i walk into bestbuys, purchase a dvd, shove it straight into my pants the moment my receipt is printed out, walk up to the guy manning the door, show him my receipt, he goes "sir, i think you forgot something, here's your DVD"...and i walk out with 2 dvds now?

NOTE: I didn't say anything to imply that i am lying to that guyy.

What's the big deal? I mean if you have the receipt and havn't stolen anything, what do you have to worry about? Show it and be on your merry way.
