Specifically, Sony's InfoLithium (li-ion?) batteries - should I charge these batteries only when they are completely depleted, or can I charge them even if they show 1/4 charge still remaining? Oh, and I heard battery life diminishes considerably after about a year of use with the InfoLithium batteries - how true is this?

You can charge whenever you like because Li-ion batteries aren't subject to the memory effect, but you shouldn't recharge TOO often because the performance degrades after a few hundred recharge cycles.
