I want to backup my server. Can I just copy c:\ (entire contents) and put it on another partition, and if I crash the server, format c:/ and paste the backup back onto C:\ and have everything go back to normal? Is this possible?
It will be best if you can get Norton Ghost 2003 or Drive Image 7 from PowerQuest. These program backup and restore your entire harddrive with ease. Drive Image 7 performs the entire backup without leaving Windows while Norton Ghost will reboot to DOS mode and do the backup from there.
Both restore process requires that the machine is booted in DOS.
I was looking for a way to get around using a third party manufacturer. I was hoping to make a batch file that would just copy the contents of the c: drive and pastet them onto another partition. Then if the c: drive crashed, i just format c: and copy the contents back onto to, hopefully making the drive the same way it was before it crashed....
Suggestion. Use the kludgly MS backup or spring for the "server" version of Drive Image or Ghost. I am guessing that you are in NTFS (as you are running a server) do a batch file will not do it (cause DOS will not read NTFS without an add in proggie) and there are files that the OS uses that will not be accessible with the OS is running.
