Question about ATI All in wonder cards...

I have an aiw 9000pro. It is not able to capture in mpg2 in real time without some dropped frames. If I had a higher clocked AIW card like a 9600 pro or 9700 or something like that would it be able to capture better??? Thanks in advance.

Has more to do with the comp, namely CPU, HD, and RAM.

Best not to do anything with the Rig while capturing with the AIW, even moving the mouse will cause dropped frames

MPEG dropping frames...likely CPU, you'll need to lower the settings, or maybe try I-frames only. The AIW's based on the R3xxx core has a 10-20% hardware assist for MPEG-2, so it "could" help, however, if you're dropping frames either your rig isn't up to snuff, or you have a configuration problem.

My duron 900 kt133 board can capture and encode the highest MPEG-2 preset without dropping frames with an AIW 7500 as a reference.

Generally, I try to avoid capturing with an editing program, as they tend to be large resource hogs, why not use MMC?

oh yeah I am trying to capture off of a dv camcorder through s-video. The video is to be edited and then made into a dvd.

MMC = Multimedia center. Just use the record feature there and select Svideo as the input. Just like recording tv.

I would use firewire and transfer the file over to your hardrive, rather than reduce its quality using analog capture.

how do i do that? i mean the camera says it's "digital" but it still gets put on a tape, isn't that still analog? My aiw doesn't have a firewire port, but i have a firewire port on my mobo, will that work?

The tape is simply the media, its stored in a digital format on the tape.

It should work. Just hook the i-link (firewire) port of the camcorder to the MB's firewire port with the proper cable.

By transfering the video over via firewire, you end up with a bit perfect copy of the original. DV format is nice for editing, and you'll have the best quality for encoding. Pinnacle works fine with DV, so you should be about set with what you got.

Also, I don't know if anyone has experience with Adobe Premier pro, but I am having problems with the audio and video getting out of sync. It seems like the more cuts or edits that you make, the more it gets out of sync, until like 40 minutes down the line it's very noticeable, off by like a second and a half. Anyone know what's going on with this? The file is an avi file. I tried to first import a mpeg file but for some reason I couldn't get the transitions to work if the file wasn't an avi file.

Not if it supports firewire...nope.

Yes, thats what I'm saying.

As far as your sync problem. Its the bane of working with video. I'd be guessing dropped frames, but it could be from a number of things. I would think that using the DV format with your digital camcorder will solve alot of your issues.
