When do you know you clocked too far? When you see even 1 artifact in a minute? Or is seeing a few OK?

Everyone has their personal threshold when it comes to stability. For some people, one crash a day is acceptable and for others one crash a month is not. Just remember this, if you're getting artifacting then your system is probably suffering instability due to heat. Heat = bad, so don't start crying if and when your system burns itself to a crisp. I would just lower the clock speed a bit. In my opinion, the extra 5 fps isn't worth the risk of damaging a product.

What is an artifact, please? I've always assumed it is an image that stays there?

An artifact is simply a screw up in the image usually due to video card overclocking. It usually comes in the form of missing or corrupt textures but could be a number of other things.

I use NVMax and keep the hz as high as I can until it tells me "Probably Unstable".
