Question about Anandtechs Jan 07 buyers guide

I was reading Anandtechs Jan 07 buyers guide and I was going to purchase the FSP Group AX450-PN 450W Power Supply they recommend but I wanted to make sure it will fit in the cases I am buying.

The case I want is the COOLER MASTER Centurion 534

what I am most concerned about is it appears the 120mm fan is on the top of the PSU. The case does not have a grill on top. Will it fit? I am getting a bunch of these and I cant risk having to return them.

Thanks in advance!

yes it will. the fan is on the bottom of the PSU. i've seen the case as well as the PSU and yes they will fit.

Yeah, they picture the PSUs upside down in the marketing pix so you can see the fan. Normally the PSU is mounted with the fan down, but if you have a choice and at least an inch of clearance above the top of the PSU in your case, I'd consider mounting the PSU with the fan up. You'll understand my logic if you think about it for a minute (or two)...

.bh.

Isn't the idea of mounting the PSU with the fan down that it helps draw air through the case? If you just wanted to cool the PSU, I'd think you'd mount it with the fan up and cut a big ole hole in the top of your case.

I have considered doing that but having a hole on top of case (& into the PSU) at work isn't a good idea. =]

On the subject of fans and this case, I have a Coolermaster 534 case which only came with a 120mm inlet fan at the front (i.e. no exhaust fan). (Seasonic S12 500W if you're wondering). After building my system (P5WDH/E6600/1900XT) and monitoring it for a while, I felt the temperatures were a bit high for comfort (especially CPU cores). So I added a 120mm exhaust fan and this knocked >10C off all the temps (around 15C off the CPU).

My conclusion therefore is that this case definitely needs an exhaust fan. FWIW

It would do you good to move the intake fan from the front to the rear if you're not planning on buying another fan.

Yeah, that's an option as well. It's worth noting that the case comes with a blue LED fan for the intake however, and part of the "look" of the case is the blue glow this generates in the mesh strips down the side of the case. Hence I chose to spend £5 on another fan to improve the airflow rather than move the supplied fan.

I believe it's possible to buy this case with a rear fan installed as well, but I saw it in a local shop so to save on delivery costs I was happy to take it as it came.
