I can't tell if the BOXED retail chip (xp2100+) on their site is a palamino or T-Bird. There is specific info on the "processor only" chips but not on the retail boxed ones. Can anyone help with this before I buy?
Thanks
Mark

I'm not sure if you're asking for a Thoroughbred (T-bred), or a Thunderbird (AMD never made T-Bird 2100+)

The retail is a Palomino.

Processor only chips are the same thing, minus the fancy box, 3 year warrenty, and stock factory heatsink.

EDIT: BTW, welcome to Anandtech Forums :)

Thanks,
I hope I'm getting the terminology right. I was noticing that people on Newegg were going crazy for the "B" version of the 2100+ which is "processor only" and is the .13 core so I figured that the retail box was out of stock for the same reason. Sounds like it's out of stock just because of price. Thanks again.

Hey I'm up to two posts already. Watch out everybody.

That is the Thoroughbred (T-Bred) which is built upon the .13 micron process. The Thunderbird (T-bird) is an older version, built upon the .18 micron process.

Keep in mind the T-bred and T-Bird are two different processors. And even then, there were 2 revisions of the Thoroughgbred.

The T-bred everyone is crazy about is the AthlonXP 2100+ Thoroughbred-B. That is because of the overclockability of these things. I managed to hit 2.4 ghz (real ghz, no PR crap), around a 3000+ rating from AMD. There are several people who even have higher OCs than I have achieved.

If you are looking to overclock, look at the AthlonXP 2100+ Tbred, not the retail.

I hope I clarified a little better.

If you have any more questions, don't hestitate to ask.

Since getting REAL work done at work seems boring I'll ask you the rest of my questions all at once. The reason for my initial ? was because I'm trying to pick out parts for a new system with money as a concern. Here are my current thoughts based on reading way too many forums late at night. Will purchase all from Newegg because of all the great things everybody says.

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
~XP 2100+ (bare?)
512 Mb of 2700 Samsung memory (2x256 in proper DDR slots)

Just bought ANTEC case with truepower 430 and it looks great but it is just sitting there. So sad.
Have GeForce 2mx card now but will go with Ti4200 or 9700(non-pro) as soon as I can scrape up enough cash.
ANY thoughts or problems you see with this setup?

I would get the bare processor you and everyone else loves but the HS/fan thing scares me. Is there a HS/fan combo that is quiet, not too expensive, and easy for a new guy to attach. I will only be playing with overclocking. Nothing too serious.

Again thanks for your time. I'm a big flight sim guy and my current setup is KILLING me. Something tells me that no matter what I do it will be a big improvement over this:
P3-866
512 Mb 133
Old sound card

If money is a concern, check out the Epox 8RDA+ at Mwave. It's only $104.50 and about $12 for 3-day shipping. Mwave is a great reseller and they shipped mine the same day I ordered it.

ditto, I love Asus boards, I've owned several; however, for $88 newegg has the Epox 8RDA with no bells and whistles. Drop my Audigy and NIC and I have everything the 8RDA+ has and almost equal to the A7N8X Deluxe. For you I recommend the 8RDA+
