Question about AMD 3500+ NC

Hi.

Can anyone tell me a good estimate about the temperature a AMD 64 3500+ New Castle should be at ?

You guys need to consider that Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste was installed just a few hours ago. According to the BIOS Hardware Monitor's temperature readings, the Motherboard (ASUS A8V Deluxe) is around 33º Celcius, and the Processor is around 45º Celsius.

I've heard the 3500+ Winchester averages between 32º to 40º Celcius, but I never heard about the NewCastle version.

I don't know how much time the thermal paste needs to really be effective, but one thing is for sure, it was very well applied, and not one amount of space is touching the air on the sink's surface. The thermal paste covers it completely, without going of the sides.

I'm just a bit worried about the temperature.

I was used to see my PIV 2.6C between 31º to 36º, rarely going into the 40º's. and that was on stock air cooling.

But this AMD, idling in the Desktop at 45º Celcius is enough to make myself ask some questions.

I've heard already that AMD have some heat issues...but...man...if it's idle doing nothing on the Desktop at 45º...what is going to be the temperature when I'm going to play games.

By the way I don't have the money to buy water cooling.

And yes, I wanted to get the Winchester, but I could not find it anywhere. So I bought the NewCastle...thinking the temperature difference wouldn't be THAT much.

Any facts or comments guys ?

is yours an AW or AS newcastle?

the new AS newcastles are actually clawhammers with 512kb cache disabled... and people are reporting these things to run pretty hot... and i can verify this as well... they do run hot!

i'm running about 48C's (software monitored) full load but that's on water...

are you sure you didn't put on too much thermal paste? that can be as bad as not enough, and only the center of the IHS needs to be covered. also, 45C is nothing to worry about for a load temp - idle that would be high, but even on an XP-120, my friend's P4 3.0E idles at around 55C at stock speed, so don't be worried.

I'm running a 3500+ 939 Winchester @ 2.5 GHz, and I get 44c 100% CPU load (Prime95).

I'm also running a 3400+ 754 Newcastle @ 2.6GHz. I get 51c 100% CPU load (Prime95).

Your temperatures seem very high for idle temps. I would clean off the HSF, and CPU, then reapply AS5 according to the instructions.

I downloaded CPU-Z 1.28, and it is indeed a 3500+ NewCastle, and the 512 KB L2 Cache is activated.

About an hour ago I simply turned off the system completely, so that way the thermal paste was able to cool a bit, and stick / solidify in position. Someone told me to do that.

That each time someone just newly applies AS5 for the first time, that a good thing to do is to let the computer run for a few hours, and then to turn it off completely, and let the paste cool to the ambient temperature.

And after that, the paste will be at its best efficiency.

That's what I did.

And at start up (about 10 minutes ago), the CPU temperature stayed between 37º to 40º Celcius. So, I think the paste was indeed well applied. And now the CPU pretty much always idles at around 40º Celcius in the Desktop...instead of something like 47º to 50º. Makes a nice difference.

I wouldn't image how nicely cooled a Winchester on AS5 would be !

Well, thanks again guys. I think I'll do with it now. It's alright. Still a little bit worried...but it's better than it was earlier today. Now I will take the time to install all my games.

what kinda HDDs are you using in that rig? i have same CPU and mobo and cant get past 2.3GHz...even at stock its not stable...someone thinks that its my SATA drive that's limiting the OC. what you reckon?

If it isn't even stable at stock, I'd look at your PSU and memory.

hmmm psu is enermax 470W noisetaker...memory is corsair 1gb twinx 3200 XL PRO...meaning its very unlikely theyre to blame...
