Hey, our router and our 3 LAN cards got struck by lighting like last week and we just got all new stuff for our computers at our home. The thing is now Aol Instant Messanger on both mine and my brothers computer has been doing this freezing thing for like 3 days now. Like it will all the sudden just got wild with all the log ons and offs and IM's at the same time. They don't all come when they should. It's very weird and annoying and I was wandering if it coudl be just AIM's system screwing up or could it be our connection? Because I have talked to my other friends and theres is just fine while mine and my bro's both do the same thing since we got new cards and router. Any comments?

Would there be any damage to the electronics elsewhere in the house, or to any other component of your systems?

I have DSL... What do you mean as in the damage to other stuff? I don't think there would be.. Everything seems to be working fine. It would even still detect my fried card but it was just all screwed up.....

It may not have just been the cards that were screwed up. Did you check for any damage to the motherboards?

I looked briefly and I really didn't notice anything... but now that I think about it I really have no idea what the damage would even look like on it...

if something's broken, it wouldn't just be AIM that's screwing up... your entire Internet connectivity would be wacked.

You know it's weird. Ever since I moved onto my home cable connection again my aim list like 'freezes' where I will be talking to someone and it will just freeze where it's at. No one can send replies but I can send to them and they don't get them. If I view someone's profile it just says "Please wait..." and never comes up, rebooting aim always fixes it but it's just annoying as hell.

Well I haven't set a system restore point since I have had this system so I don't think that would do any good. And yeah CorporateRecreation, I feel ya on the annoying as hell part because it really is.

I know it's not my computer since it worked fine on a different connection. I think what is happening is that the cable is flaking out for like 2 seconds and it freezes aim but everything isn't effected because there isn't enough loss of time to mess anything up. Strange since AIM is very resiliant.

Yeah, everything else is working as it was like my downloading any everything is steady and the same speeds it was. Its just weird because I will get IM's from people asking me why I keep getting on and off. So I guess AIM keeps kicking me off and then resigning me on again. Plus everything freezes up and all that. AIM is just basically pissing me off now.

I'm really glad to know it's just not me. Are you using the new beta of aim by chance?

I've got 5.2.3277. I think this is the new beta but not sure. It's the only thing I could find on their site to try and re-install to see if anything would change. It's weird though because mine and my brothers computer both had these same versions before we got new cards and a new router and it was fine. Now with the new ones and stuff it just fVcks up...

You know, I have a strange suspicion that since the new beta's have a "through the router" type connection, and yet your router blocks these ports, there might be some correlation between that. I tried removing my router and just directly connecting to the modem but it still did it.

Well I am back again and my AIM is still doing this.... I even have tried trillian and some other stuff and it still screws up and kicks me off and on and all that... I think it has something to do with how our new router/network card is set up on WinXP..?? Anyone know of ANYTHING I could try?!
