QUestion about a leaking valve cover gasket

i saw an integra im really interested in buying that has a leaking valve cover gasket. Im wondering how can this negatively effect the car in both the short and long term? How much/long does it cost to get it fixed/replaced?

Probably about $10 for the part and another 15mins to fix it yourself or have a buddy come over and do it. Its one of the easiest things to fix, well some cars manage to make it a PITA but those are in the minority. The only real damage it can cause as long as the guy didn't ever let it get too low on oil is a filthy engine bay.

The gasket cost about $6 for me, but the labour was about ~$80 AUD all up (air filter and gubbins sits on top and in the way I think).

My engine bay was incredibly filthy until I got it done, and the car always stank of burning oil after you drove it 😉

No harm done, but you had to watch the oil (140km/h cruising used to do terrible things to my oil consumption).

If I remember correctly on older Honda civics at least (90% f the Integra is a civic in design and parts are usually interchangeable or sometimes identical), the intake manifold comes over the valve cover so it'll be a 2 hour job if you know nothing about it and it'll be your first time tackling such a procedure.

As for damage or whatnot, not much. You might lose some oil between oil changes, anywhere from negligible to maybe 1/2 a qt but nothing really all that bad. The main thing to look for is if you need to change the PCV valve also. It's possible crankcase pressure built up and pushed the gasket out and the PCV valve is a maintainence item that needs replacement if it clogs. Again, not a big deal, a PCV valve is cheap and decently easy to replace. Get a shop manual and the 2 repairs will be relatively as painless and easy as it gets as far as working under the hood goes.

depends on how much it leaks, andy drip onto the manifold can cause a fire. Granted I haven't had it happen to me but the possibility is there.

For me a Vavle cover gasket was 60 bucks and I get parts at jobber rate. I don't have expereince with an Acura so if it uses a standard rubber gasket they are cheaper than the silicone ones or valve covers that have bolt holes going through an area the inside of the gasket sealing area.

Usually you can get away with just tightening the valve cover bolts/nuts. Usually they get lose over time due to mechanical vibration. However, you have to be careful not to strip the threads in the cylinder head!!!!!!

But yeah it's the easilest thing to fix. Usually the Gaskket is a 10 to 20 dollar part and it would take about 10 to 30 mins to replace. Depending on how many hoses or parts you have connected onto the valve cover.

Some cars have no valve cover gasket. They say use RTV.
