question about a DVD burner

Aharami

Lifer
I recently purchased the LOTR Extended trilogy pack for my gf's dad as a xmas present. The thing is that gf's sister and mom are really rough with DVDs and all their DVDs have scratches on them. I want her dad to be able to keep the original discs as scratch free as possible (he's a big LOTR fan).

So im thinking of recommending a DVD burner so he can make backup discs and view those instead. My only concern is loss of quality from doing a double layer to single layer copy - i want the copies almost as good as the originals since the family will mostly be viewing those.

I came across this DVD burner deal on tigerdirect (recently purchased a Belkin UPS from tigerdirect and pretty satisfied with them). Is this DVD burner any good? How feasible is it to make a DL DVD copy? and what software is the best for making DL to DL DVD copies?

NEC Burners should all be at or under $50 bucks these days... go to NewEgg.com for current pricing.

You don't buy DVD Shrink... it's a free program. Do realize it's not able to decode some of the more recent DVDs and updates aren't coming anymore (just like DVD Decrypter). A good program you can purchase (or try for free first) is DVDFab Express. One click backups, and it's still being updated and will decode current movies that Shrink and Decrypter cannot.

To find places to get the other free programs, just do a Google Search... remember Google is your friend.

Yeah, the Lite On CD drives were great. From what I've heard, their DVD burners are not quite as good, but I have no experience with them. Personally, I have an NEC 3520a. This paired with DVD Shrink and Taiyo Yuden media has resulted in great backups for me. I've never done a DL to DL backup though, as I'm too cheap to get DL media. There is a drop in quality, but this depends on how much you compress the movie. If you strip out a lot of the extras, and the DVD isn't too big to begin with, you sometimes don't have to compress it much (or at all).

how much does DL media cost? I thought the prices came down significantly...

Last I checked it was still $2+ a disc, which I guess isn't that bad. But, like I said, I'm cheap 😛
