Question about 802.11b and cable internet speed?

If I have cable internet service that is 6mbps down/768kbps up what kind of speeds can I expect to get over an 802.11b router? Assuming good signal strength to the router will I be able to max the internet connection out or will it be much slower? TIA

I have 3mb cable and I usually only keep about 1.5mb(2mb max) with excellent signal with 802.11b. Really your wasting money paying for 6mb if you don't get at least a 802.11g 54Mbps router and card. Even that I don't think will max out your 6mb connection but should come close. Either get new wireless stuff or pay for cheaper speeds if available. Of course I am no expert when it comes to wireless so anyone feel free to correct me.

Most of the budget .11b gear is good for 4-5mb under perfect/ideal conditions. typically you will see on the low end of that. If you start adding obstructions it will take a hit from that. If you have true 6Mb internet then your losing speed with a 802.11b AP generally speaking

This is a borderline situation.

A good 6 Mb/sec. Cable connection should yield 600KB/sec, file download from a fast site (IBM, Microsoft).

If your cable connection is good and provides the whole 6Mb/sec. bandwidth, and your 802.11b is a little quirky (full strength signal is a guarantee to optimal transfer).
then you would lose bandwidth.

Also if you have multiple people on your network that can slow things down more or people nearby with another wireless router
