The model I'm looking at is the Sony SDM-P232W/B. The response time listed everywhere is 40ms, which is horrible. However, from what I've read, the panel itself is identical to the older Apple Cinema HD 23" Display, for which Apple never disclosed a response time.

My dilemma is that I can't find any professional reviews of the Sony anywhere, and the user reviews from Amazon say that there is little or no ghosting in games and movies, which I find hard to believe for a 40ms panel. But all the professional reviews of the old Apple display say that it is fine for movies and games.

So what gives? Are they the same panels or not? And is the Sony going to be acceptable for light gaming and DVDs?

BTW, the reason I'm looking at this older 23" display instead of the newer models with 16ms response times...money. I can score the Sony panel at a significant discount.

Well the older Apple cinemas displays were awful for response time... so if that's what it is, then i wouldn't bother getting it. You can get the HP or BenQ for the premium you're paying for an older Sony display.

Not so, I've read many user reviews about the quality of Apples older 23" Cinema display and people watched movies without issues on them. Apple marketed the display with the ideas of HD resoluton, "cinema" quality, etc., so I doubt they would have allowed the monitor to ghost significantly while watching DVDs (which is another selling point of widescreens).

Unless I can get the HP or BenQ for $700 (I told you I'm getting a 'significant' discount, didn't I? :))

The old Apple 23" Display was good enough for movies, but did ghost during fast gaming. The 40ms estimate I would say is right on the money. After that, they released the 20" widescreen, which I believe was 25ms (even though they never officially released the specs). The latest batch of Apple displays run at 16ms. You could always look into getting one of those.

Hrrrmm...

Thanks for the info. I think I will get it and try it out with games and TV/DVD. If it is good for tha latter only, I might keep it as a bedroom TV.

I'll let you guys know either way.

My second choice is a new 2001FP, which is about the same price.
