Well what is your ambient temp, what cooling are you using, what speed is your chip? Ovearall I'd expect somewhere around the upper 40's to low 50's, but there are too many variables, and you gave absolutly no info.

I have 3 case fans and a metal case with some air holes on the side. And I'm thinking of an athlon 3200+ and I will use the heatsink and fan that came with the cpu. And what the maximum a venice cpu can take before it drops in it's performance?

And from what temperature will the processor start to loose performance?

Mine is overclocked and overvolted and when playing games it doesn't get much above 50C with the retail heatsink/fan. I have decent case ventilation, but not the best. Running Prime 95 gets it up into the mid 50's, sometimes near 60 on the small FFT tests.

It won't really start to lose performance as it gets hotter. They don't start to throttle until the core temp gets to 80C I think.

My current athlon xp is 80 on the desktop and when running farcry it lags like hell. so I suspect that the performance suffers at high temperatures.

BTW not the temperature but 80 is way too hot dbl check with another program
does your mb do throtteling?
check a motherboard forum for your board to see what it should do
frycry takes about the max horsepower available
what are you running?
mb, memory, video, os, background apps, etc
if you are not in the market for a new rig you can tune the one you have :)

It's an asus a7n8x deluxe. plugged onto it is a geforce 6800 gt and 1024 mb of ram. I close antivirus and firewall when playing games on windows xp home edition. I don't know what throtteling is. The mbm reports that it's very close to 80 degrees when on the desktop.

If it's running 80C you need to check your heatsink and make sure it's installed properly.

It all depends at on what speed your Athlon64 throttles. Otherwise, it doesn't lose performance, it just suddenly dies. :p

Do you mean 80C or 80F? 80C is way to hot; you definately have the heatsink installed wrong. Farcry probably lags because the rest of yoru computer is slow, I doubt heat would lag it.
