W98 is suddenly doing something queer at startup (go figure).

"Creating user profile ... loading system policies"

User profiles are not used. What is this and how do I make it go away?
 
Sound like you have Microsoft Client running. Check your network properties and change it back to Windows logon. you can then uninstall Client form the network properties page.
 
The only restriction is not displaying Network Neighborhood on the desktop.

The Primary Network Logon is Windows Logon. Client for Microsoft Networks does exist but only for NetBEUI to be anchored to for diabling of NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

I cannot think of anything I have changed recently, especially with networking.
