at buy.com they have a 40GB EIDE ULTRA-ATA/100 3.5LP 7200RPM 8.5MS FIREBALL AS

i was wondering if this is a good HD. i know IBM and maxtor are the basic choices. what does 3.5LP mean. and Fireball AS. is that just the name of the HD?

this is sorta mixed with hot deals . but if i understand right. 180 for the drive then -$30 coupon. and it says theres $35 rebate on the Drive. so $115 is total ?

I am running 3 Quantum HDs, I have had no problems. I think, in spite of many strongly held opinions, there is little quality difference between the major manufactures. Read some reviews and you will see that some are faster then others but evewn that changes from generation to generation, and very few of them fully use even the ATA33 bandwidth. Get the one that fits your needs and pocketbook. This sounds like a pretty good deal, go for it!

Quantum makes really good HD's.
The IBM 75gxp is probably a slightly better drive, but I love my 2 9.1gig Quantum KA's in Raid0 :D

Quantum makes some really good drives, but according to Storage Review, the performance of the AS drive is quite disappointing as compared to the LM.

Where is the -$30 coupon? I just ordered one of those and I can only find a $10 off coupon.

Had always been using Quantum Hdds all through my computing life. That's... 8 years ^^ No problems with them at all. Just a tad on the noisy side but I don't mind ^^

I do not like Quantum at all. Almost all the Quantum drives I have seen have been failing. Just last week the Quantum 25GB in my fathers computer at work died. It took all his data with it (backup was also bad :( ). If you want reliability, right now Maxtor looks the best.

MWink:

Quantum's reliability ranks way up there with IBM and Seagate. Maxtor recently made a name for themselves in reliability. They're all good brands, either way you go, Quantum belong to Maxtor now.

I have had to many bad experiances with Maxtor, but Quantum makes nice drives... Like everyone is saying, they are all in the same ballpark... Kinda like Chevy, Ford, Dodge, they all break down once and a while- except Ford's do it a lot more than Chevy, hehehe :D
